Palehua - June 26, 2021
Up above Kapolei and Makakilo sits Camp Palehua or if you were one of the fortunate kids to go up there in the Hanabada Days you would remember it as Camp Timberline. Camp Palehua is part of 1600 acres of conservation and agricultural land owned by Gill 'Ewa Lands. Located on the southern slopes of the Wai'anae mountains above Kapolei, Camp Palehua offers environmental education and cultural preservation programs/activities and opportunities to foster stewardship within the community. To learn more, please check out their IG @camp_palehua We are grateful for the opportunity to support the conservation efforts at Camp Palehua. Under the supervision of their conservation manager, Mashuri Waite, we worked to clear invasive Guinea grass encroaching on an area of 'Ilima and Alahe'e. He took every opportunity to educate us on the species of endemic flora we were helping. Our efforts will provide a better chance of survival and continued resoration of native plants and trees in the area. Mahalo to the volunteers that answered the call. We hope you found your time spent as fulfilling, educational, and fun as we did |

Waahila Ridge Volunteers came to try to tackle some of the rubbish that has accumulated on Waahila Ridge in Manoa. Many of the rock outcroppings and small caves were used as shelter by homeless / houseless individuals. Now that most of the homeless have either gotten some help or moved elsewhere, the old belongings, clothes, tarps, beds, and rubbish had remained and is in need of clearing. Other groups such as Kanaka Climbers have cleared some areas and did an excellent job. We went and cleared as much as we could as well and focused on two sites. Our small group was able to haul down approximately 20 large contractor bags, which filled our volunteer pickup truck twice and taken to the municipal dump in Kailua (Mahalo to the Ross Ohana). There is still so much more that we bundled and piled together and SO much more that were unable to get to due to time. Waahila Ridge is becoming a known area to enjoy a short hike or to try some of the Bouldering that a few climbers have developed there. We humbly ask for your Kokua to be mindful of your rubbish and to bring an extra rubbish bag with you to help clean the area up after your hike or climb and to always, wherever you go in nature, to leave it better than you found it. We are tentatively planning a Saturday Feb 27th excursion to bring down the remaining bags and bundles. |

Where: Waimea Bay Waimea Valley Rd, Pupukea, HI 96712 Who: 808 Cleanups and climbers who wanna help About: Waimea bay is one of Oahu's beloved crag where I can safely say is the first bouldering spot established on the island. Most of us who climb outdoor, has definitely climbed here once or twice. With a picturesque ambiance of clear blue ocean, and boulders over soft sand to fall over, attracts many climbers and non-climbers to enjoy this beautiful bay. Like many of our popular coastlines and shore, trash are left behind by our less considerate visitors of Waimea bay, so here's to another cleaning and climbing sesh with the help of supplying our cleaning tools, 808 Cleanups! Hope to see everyone out there! |
